![]() Crackity Jones, Broken Face (another singalong), Debaser and Planet Of Sound which sound huge and blast me into a corner. Gouge Away and There Goes My Gun are majestic, as is the highlight of Mary Chain cover Head On that blows me away with a gargantuan slab of ramped up guitar noise that fills the venue like a rabid monster. Paz also has her turn to shine with a great rendition of Gigantic which proves she can match Kim Deal pound for pound in the bass-playing stakes. ![]() Then the place erupts with I’ve Been Tired, turning into a mass singalong that continues when they air their massive anthem Monkey Gone To Heaven. Joey does some clever trickery using the plug from his guitar for some weird effects that has me grinning from ear to ear and some wide mouthed fans looking on in awe at a guitar legend.Īs usual with a Pixies gig there’s no banter in between songs, just a full on headrush of classics including the brilliant Dead with THAT guitar solo and Lovering’s drum beat that continues to slay me today. The old Surfa Rosa / Come On Pilgrim / Doolittle tracks just pile in one after the other, Here Comes Your Man, Brick Is Red, Break My Body, Ed Is Dead, Vamos, Jesus it’s relentless. The place is bouncing and if there was no air conditioning on the go I swear the walls would be dripping. A greatest hits mixed with old tracks and quite a few new ones thrown in, which keep the old faithful fans on their feet. They unusually kick off with Ana from the underrated Bossanova rather than a usual heavy track, and we get treated to a rare false start which amuses Frank who berates Joey and has a cheeky wink. The audience is full of excitement for this 8pm start and Pixies enter the stage bang on time to a massive applause, all smiles, ready to launch into what we all know will be a sprawling set. Tonight is special for the lucky people who got their hands on a ticket when it was announced on Monday morning, and the whole affair is nothing short of pure spine tingling power from Frank Black, Joey Santiago, David Lovering and the excellent Paz Lenchantin. Pixies are a revitalised group who keep on rolling some thirty plus years later, with a new album on the horizon and a sprawling back catalogue of classics that still resonate today. The night ended with the euphoric "Race for the Prize" which was also when the band brought out the "FUCK YEAH BROOKLYN STEEL" balloons. Is this a coincidence? The hottest day of the year versus one of the hottest bands on Earth? Too right. ![]() Brooklyn Steel also got "Do You Realize?," "She Don't Use Jelly," "My Cosmic Autumn Rebellion," "Waitin' For a Superman," and more. They played five songs off that record, including "Will You Return / When You Come Down," "Flowers of Neptune 6" and "Assassins of Youth" which made its live debut at this show. Monday was the first of two Flaming Lips shows at Brooklyn Steel as part of their tour supporting their great 2020 album American Head. And, of course, Wayne in his spacebubble. There were still lots of balloons, though, and confetti, flying neon Da Vinci birds, giant inflatable robots and all the other joyous, trippy stuff you expect at a Lips show, just slightly more chilled out. Most notably, the balloon count is down as, Wayne said with all the bouncing around and multiple people touching them, it might bring anxiety to some instead of joy. The band have gone back to "normal," but frontman Wayne Coyne noted at Brooklyn Steel on Monday night (11/8) that this tour is a little more subdued than ones in the past due to Covid. It wasn't that long ago that The Flaming Lips were playing shows where the band and the audience were all inside giant plastic spacebubbles.
